Doomsday Book is an anthology about three apocalyptic scenarios: A temple robot attains enlightenment and is worshipped by monks while its manufacturer orders it decommissioned. A man triggers a mysterious zombie outbreak after a night of excess, plunging Seoul into chaos. In another story, a girl orders a replacement billiard ball online—years later a giant comet shaped like one heads toward Earth.

Doomsday Book ist eine Anthologie über drei Weltuntergangsszenarien: Ein Tempelroboter erlangt Erleuchtung und wird von Mönchen verehrt, während seine Herstellerfirma ihn abschalten will. Ein Mann löst nach einer Nacht voller Exzesse eine mysteriöse Zombie-Pandemie aus, die Seoul ins Chaos stürzt. In einer weiteren Geschichte bestellt ein Mädchen online eine Billardkugel – Jahre später rast ein riesiger, kugelförmiger Komet auf die Erde zu.

The Research Training Group 2833 East Asian Futures is pleased to invite you to our public outreach event “Visions of the Future in East Asian Cinema.”

On 18 March 2026 (16:00–21:00), we will explore cinematic visions of the future from South Korea and China. The selected films engage with questions of technology, society, apocalypse, and imagination. Each screening will be introduced and contextualised by our PhD researchers and Qualifying Fellows, followed by a discussion.

The event is open to everyone, and admission is free of charge.

This time, we will present the South Korean science fiction anthology Doomsday Book (2012) and the Chinese sci-fi comedy Moon Man (2022). This event is organised in cooperation with the local cinema endstation.kino (Wallbaumweg 108, 44894 Bochum).

We warmly invite all students, colleagues, and members of the public who are interested in East Asian cinema, future imaginaries, and cultural perspectives on societal change to join us.

Die Research Training Group 2833 East Asian Futures lädt herzlich zu unserer öffentlichen Veranstaltung „Visions of the Future in East Asian Cinema“ ein.

Am 18. März 2026 (16:00–21:00 Uhr) erkunden wir filmische Zukunftsvisionen aus Südkorea und China. Die ausgewählten Filme beschäftigen sich mit Fragen zu Technologie, Gesellschaft, Apokalypse und Imagination. Jede Vorführung wird von unseren Doktorand:innen und Qualifying Fellows eingeführt und kontextualisiert, anschließend folgt eine Diskussion.

Die Veranstaltung ist für alle offen, der Eintritt ist frei.

Gezeigt werden die südkoreanische Science-Fiction-Anthologie Doomsday Book (2012) sowie die chinesische Sci-Fi-Komödie Moon Man (2022). Die Veranstaltung findet in Kooperation mit dem lokalen Kino endstation.kino (Wallbaumweg 108, 44894 Bochum) statt.
